Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author Michael Swanwick has been slowly building the world of the Mongolian Wizard on Tor.com since 2012. The series depicts an alternate fin de siècle Europe shot through with magic, mystery, and intrigue, unveiled piece by piece in a series of stand-alone stories, and visualized with art by Greg Manchess.
The seventh story in that series, “The Phantom in the Maze,” debuted today. Want to keep exploring this alternate world? You can read every single one of the Mongolian Wizard stories right here, for free.

Know nothing about the stories. But I have to compliment the artwork. Nice work!
Read them, they’re awesome. I wish he’d write a novel with these characters.
Will there be a collection or bundle of these stories?
I’ve just finished reading all of the stories so far. Although Michael Swanwick is a favourite author, I’d not quite got around to reading these yet.
Beautiful writing as ever. I tore through the stories, enjoying every one of them. Like everyone else here it seems I’m wondering if there will be a collection or maybe a novel? These remind me a lot of the sort of big narrative told through short story that Arthur Conan Doyle or G.K. Chesteron used.
What would be really lovely to see would be an illustrated collection where Gregory Manchess provided some additional illustrations to accompany the text.
Anyway, I’m eagerly awaiting the next story in the series.
